SAMEDAY, the courier company that pioneered easybox delivery in Romania, projects a regional increase of over 40% in parcel deliveries this Black Friday compared to last year, driven by ongoing investments in the expansion of the easybox network and enhancements in operational capacity. In Romania, order volumes are expected to peak at approximately 850,000 parcels in a single day, marking an increase of over 80% compared to the busiest day in September.
“Black Friday marks the most dynamic period for the e-commerce industry and serves as a test of our ability to ensure efficient deliveries. We anticipate significant volumes, bringing high operational complexity, and we are fully committed to ensuring each parcel reaches its destination as quickly as possible. This year, we have made substantial investments in expanding our out-of-home network and increasing operational capacity to support our e-commerce partners’ success. We stand by our regional clients during this intense period, creating new growth opportunities that extend beyond national borders“, stated Lucian Baltaru, CEO of SAMEDAY Group.
In the cross-border delivery segment, SAMEDAY anticipates accelerated growth in the number of parcels, particularly on the Romania-Bulgaria and Romania-Hungary routes, reflecting the increasing interest of Romanian online retailers in expanding sales beyond national borders. The company estimates that during this period, it will deliver over half a million parcels through its cross-border service, further strengthening support for e-commerce partners in their growth across regional markets.
Over 65% of Romanians are expected to choose easybox delivery on Black Friday
According to SAMEDAY’s latest market study conducted this month, over 65% of urban consumers planning to shop online during Black Friday intend to choose easybox delivery. The research further highlights that this flexible delivery option has become a key factor in purchasing decisions, with 7 in 10 Romanians stating that the availability of easybox delivery influences their choice of online retailer. Additionally, the study confirms the service’s growing popularity, with 95% of urban Romanians reporting they have used the easybox network at least once to receive or send a parcel.
In the first nine months of the year, over 84% of online stores within the SAMEDAY ecosystem delivered at least one parcel to easybox, demonstrating that this delivery option has become a standard for e-commerce businesses aiming to remain relevant to consumers. Between January and September, SAMEDAY delivered over 36 million parcels to easybox, marking a 50% increase compared to the previous year.
In Romania, SAMEDAY estimates that over 1.6 million parcels will be delivered to easybox during the first days of the Black Friday campaign, with a daily average of approximately 330,000 parcels.
Regional easybox network – 40% growth in 2024
SAMEDAY’s regional easybox network has now reached approximately 7,000 units, a 40% increase over last year. This expansion was supported by significant investments of over 150 million lei in out-of-home infrastructure development. In Romania, the easybox network now includes 4,900 lockers, an increase of 1,000 units compared to last year. In Bulgaria, the network has exceeded 900 units, marking a 122% growth, while in Hungary, the easybox network has reached 1,100 units.
In parallel with expanding its easybox network, SAMEDAY has developed a new shop-in-shop delivery service. The new service, SAMEDAY point, enhances the easybox delivery experience and provides additional capacity to manage high volumes in areas where lockers are frequently in demand, with the network now comprising 750 points regionally. In Bulgaria, as part of its strategy to expand the out-of-home network, SAMEDAY has partnered with the Bulgarian Post, allowing consumers in the neighboring country to collect their parcels directly from postal units starting from Black Friday.
New sorting systems added to operational flow
To effectively handle the high delivery volumes of the Black Friday season, SAMEDAY Group has made substantial investments this year to expand operational capacity across its three markets. In Romania, six advanced automated sorting systems have been integrated into the operational flow, capable of processing over 38,000 parcels per hour, raising total sorting capacity across the country’s three hubs and agencies to over 100,000 parcels per hour. One system was implemented at the Central SAMEDAY Hub, with two additional systems installed at agencies servicing central Romania. To further streamline sorting in the western region, three automated systems were also installed in agencies in Cluj and Timisoara.
Significant investments were directed this year towards Bulgaria and Hungary, resulting in an increase in sorting capacity of up to 60% in each country compared to last year. SAMEDAY Group’s total planned investment for 2024 is projected to exceed 60 million euros.
In Romania, to effectively manage the high volume of orders during peak periods, SAMEDAY expanded its courier fleet and increased hub staffing by nearly 60% compared to business as usual. Additionally, the number of trucks dedicated to parcel transport between hubs and agencies rose from 230 to nearly 400, and warehouse operating hours were extended to efficiently support increased processing flows.
This year, during the Black Friday campaign, parcels will be kept in easybox lockers for a maximum of 36 hours from the time they are loaded. Over 90% of products ordered this Black Friday will reach their recipients within 24–48 hours from the moment they enter the SAMEDAY network.
*The market study conducted by SAMEDAY was carried out between October 4 and 22, 2024, using the CAWI method on a sample of 800 individuals, representative at the national level for urban consumers who shop online. The margin of error is +/- 3%, with a confidence level of 95%.
